Inspired by the sinister supernatural underground universe from the first season of “Stranger Things,” I wrote the lyrics and vocal melodies for “Upside Down” in 2016 with the hopes that it would be released as a part of collaboration with a friend’s synthpop band. When that collaboration changed gears, I saved the unpublished track and put it back into the vault.
Six years later, as the newest member of Nashville-based industrial rock band God in Rehab, I resurrected the original concept and asked Spookie Rollings (guitarist, keyboardist, and backing vocalist) and drummer Matt Hosafros to rewrite and reimagine the song.
After sound engineer Sean Sheppard of Soul Crow Studio in East Nashville recorded and put the finishing touches on the mixed and mastered track, we began rehearsing “Upside Down” with our live bassist, Jess O’Donnell. (Both Spookie and Jess also perform with the local Nine Inch Nails cover band, “Not Your Nails,” while Spookie also plays guitars for Nashville’s demonic stoner rock band, Omenbringer.)
This is the second original collaboration from God in Rehab’s new lineup. Our first song together was “Solemn,” written by Spookie with help from Matt and myself, to raise awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit (#MMIWG2).
The result of our newest songwriting efforts is an experimental, aggressive track with an underlying seductive playfulness and curiosity for all things upside down. “As above, so below….”

LYRICS:
Another night,
another reason to stay inside
this silence.
I’m in denial,
I never want to give into this,
this darkness.
I toss and turn until my body aches.
I hold it tight until it suffocates.
From deep inside I hear a knocking sound.
Watch me turn your world upside down.
I found a way
to slip into a
deeper sleep.
I’m drowning.
It’s in decay.
The world above,
As so below …
dream walking.
I think about it every night and day.
I want to save you
but you run away.
I never felt this ‘til you came along.
Watch me turn your world upside down.
Watch me turn your world
Watch me turn your world
Watch me turn your world
upside down.
Watch me turn your world
Watch me turn your world
Watch me turn your world
upside down.
I think there’s been a mistake.
This is all I can take.
Didn’t think this through.
I did it all for you.
I think there’s been a mistake.
This is all I can take.
Didn’t think this through.
I did it all for you.
I can’t escape it when I close my eyes.
This kind of love will leave you paralyzed.
I want to hurt you, though I know it’s wrong.
Inside out when you’re upside down.
I can’t escape the things I’ve done to you.
I think about the things I want to do.
There’s no denying where I belong.
Now I find myself upside down.
