Newspaper Journalism

During my journalism career, I have spent more than five years as a writer and an editor of various newspapers, including Nuvo Newsweekly, a free weekly arts, entertainment, and culture publication with a circulation of 46,000 readers in Indianapolis, Indiana. As Nuvo’s Music Editor, I managed, assigned, and edited content from freelance photographers and writers; conducted interviews; contributed informative and enriching originally written editorial content; adhered to a demanding production schedule; and co-hosted a local music show on IMC-TV. Prior to that, I was a freelance food/dining reporter for AOL CityGuide and tackled pop culture and arts/lifestyle news for the Dayton City Paper (formerly Impact Weekly), during which time my cover story won a First Place Feature Writing Award from the Society of Professional Journalists. I also wrote the weekly “Soundboard” column for Impact Weekly, covering the Dayton music scene.

As the Editor in Chief of the Indiana Daily Student Weekend, the newsweekly for Indiana University Bloomington in Indiana, I wrote, assigned, and edited news stories; oversaw the design and production of the publication; and managed a staff of writers, photographers, and graphic designers. I later served as the Special Projects Reporter for the Ball State Daily News during my graduate journalism studies, producing front page in-depth news stories. Prior to that, as the Managing Editor of The Guardian newspaper at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, I managed a team of writers and designers to produce a weekly newspaper. I was promoted to the position after serving two years as the Features Editor, having won the “Most Improved Writer” award as a sophomore in college.

As an active journalist in my community, I am also a member of the Society of Professional Journalists and the American Marketing Association. The following articles are samples of my published newspaper journalism.
