Out from the Inside

I am the bear
He is the eagle
Trapped inside a boy
Who swallowed him whole

Wings beaten and wilted
Talons torn, scraping the lining
like a man in his casket
not two hours underground

The eagle, heavy as a headstone
flits its numb wings —
screeching, yet without sound

The boy has sewn
his mouth shut
Behind bloodied string
he cracks a murmur, which
bellows from a full stomach

I stand as the bear on hind legs
Protector, spirit guide, dream walker…
Eagle! Wake up!

The only way out is up
or through…
